Marler Blog Providing Commentary on Food Poisoning Outbreaks & Litigation

Mr. President, Senator Reid, there are 550,000,000 and ONE reasons to move on S. 510!

In the middle of yet another massive recall and illness outbreak – 550,000,000 eggs being recalled – with millions being spent on recall costs or millions be lost in sales – Mr. President, Senator Reid, please do not forget one other reason to pass this Bill.

    Mr. Marler,
Could you please tell me what this propose legislation would do to help make America’s food supply safer?
Does it ban GMO crops from being sold for human consumption, or used to feed livestock? Or, at minimum, does it require the labelling of any food product which contains GMO crops or from animals fed GMO crops?
GMO crops are very dangerous and can cause severe organ damage in humans and livestock, as well as allergic and toxic reactions. There is good reason why they are banned in most other nations, including the EU.
Does this bill propose to ban or greatly limit the practice of administering anti-biotics to livestock in their feed, or injecting them with growth hormones such as rBGH? Or at minimum, does it require the labelling of any product which comes from such livestock?
Does it propose to greatly limit the amount of grain fed to cattle in feedlots, which artificially acidifes their rumen? Or better yet, does it propose to totally eliminate the practice of feedlots, and place all ruminating animals on pasture where they belong and where they produce safe and nutritious milk and meat?
Perhaps at minimum it could require the labelling of animal products produced in feedlots and confinement style operations?
In the context of this huge salmonella egg outbreak, does it propose to require that flocks of laying hens be appropriately sized, for them to express their natural instincts, and be either rotated on pasture, or free-range? Doing this to the production of all American eggs would greatly lessen the risk of salmonella outbreaks like the one we are seeing.
Unless I am mistaken, the legislation which you are promoting does not propose any of the food safety measures which I have just suggested. If I am not mistaken, the legislation you are promoting will only further entrench the types of mass-production factory farms which continue to make Americans sick with both accute G.I. illness (from which you make all of your money suing over) and chronic & life-style illnesses such as diabetes, obesity, cancer, and heart disease, from the sterile, over processed, and nutrient-less food they produce.
If I am not mistaken, the legislation you are promoting will only further marginalize and criminalize small-scale diversified farms which utilize sustainable methods, to produce safe wholesome food.
Please explain why you favor this legislation which would make it even more difficult, expensive, and possibly criminal for consumers to obtain high-quality food.
