Recall of Walnuts – Potential Salmonella

Screen shot 2010-12-07 at 5.37.38 PM.pngAt a Glance: Atlas Walnut Co of California is voluntarily recalling walnut halves and pieces because a shipment sent to another manufacturer has tested positive for the presence of Salmonella. Azar Nut Co, which receives product from Atlas, has asked U.S. Foodservice to recall the products.

The Issue: No illness has been reported. Azar reports their own tests for Salmonella are negative, but they are nevertheless initiating the recall in an excess of caution. Salmonella is a serious food-borne illness that can be dangerous to the elderly, the young, and the immuno-compromised. Those infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
