The dried egg products were produced between Feb. 28, 2013, and Feb. 8, 2014, and bear the establishment number “INSPECTED EGG PRODUCTS PLANT 21493G” inside the USDA Mark of Inspection. These products were shipped nationwide and to U.S. military installations in the United States and abroad, as well as to Canada.

The problem was discovered by Washington State Laboratories in response to a billing inquiry by Nutriom LLC. The laboratory then notified FSIS personnel of the discrepancies in laboratory results. FSIS and the company have received no reports of illnesses due to consumption of these products.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment. In some persons, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact their health care provider.

FSIS inspects egg products under the Egg Products Inspection Act. FDA typically takes jurisdiction of egg products after they leave the egg facility if they are incorporated into FDA-regulated products. In this case, USDA is leading the recall rather than FDA because the products are in consumer packages with an identifiable USDA Mark of Inspection, and FSIS had jurisdiction over the product when the contamination occurred. FSIS and FDA are continuing to work together to ensure food safety, and the management of this recall is such an example.

FSIS has updated the recall release issued on Feb. 8, 2014 to reflect that beef products associated with the recall were shipped to distribution centers and retail establishments in California, Florida, Illinois, Oregon, Texas and Washington.

To date retail outlets in California, Florida, Oregon and Washington have been announced.

Rancho Feeding Corporation of Petaluma, California recalled approximately 8,742,700 pounds of meat this week because it processed diseased and unsound animals and carried out these activities without the benefit or full benefit of federal inspection.

The recalled beef carcasses and boxes bear the establishment number “EST. 527” inside the USDA mark of inspection.  Each box bears the case code number ending in “3” or “4.” The products were produced Jan. 1, 2013 through Jan. 7, 2014 and shipped to distribution centers and retail establishments in California, Florida, Illinois and Texas.  Oregon and Washington were added today.

Here’s the latest complete list of retailers available.

ROTH FARMS Inc. of Belle Glade, Fl , is recalling its “ bunched Curly Parsley” because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The recalled “Curly Parsley” was distributed in South Florida distribution centers.

The product comes in a 3 Wire Wooden Crate with the lot # AG01GN on the outside tag.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by the company revealed the presence of Salmonella in some Curly Parsley samples.”

Production of the product has been suspended while FDA and the company continue their investigation as to the source of the problem.

Ricardo Lopez of the LA Times reported today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s inspector general has opened an investigation into the Northern California firm behind a massive recall of nearly 9 million pounds of beef products, raising the possibility of criminal wrongdoing by the company.

Rancho Feeding Corp. of Petaluma on Saturday announced a recall of 8.7 million pounds of beef products processed at its plant over the last year and sold in California and three other states. They included whole carcasses, beef tongue, head, tripe and oxtail.

Federal regulators said that the plant “processed diseased and unsound animals” without a full federal inspection. As a result, the agency said, the “products are … unsound, unwholesome or otherwise are unfit for human food and must be removed from commerce.”

The involvement of the USDA’s inspector general signals that there may have been criminal wrongdoing, according to food safety attorney Bill Marler in Seattle.

The USDA is “taking it up a notch,” Marler said. It’s “not very usual” for this to happen, he added.

Though regulators haven’t disclosed many details, Marler said the company could face criminal charges if it knowingly shipped “adulterated” meat products without inspection.

There have been no reported illnesses linked to the beef products in question, the company and the USDA said.

A call seeking comment from Rancho Feeding went unanswered Tuesday.

Tony Leys from the Des Moines Register got a chance to meet one of my heroes yesterday – Mary McGonigle-Martin, who he described as “a California mother who almost lost her son to a bacterial infection urged Iowa lawmakers Monday not to legalize the sale of unpasteurized milk.”  Mary got a trip to lovely Des Moines in the middle of winter.  Here is the part of her testimony to pay attention to:

Mary McGonigle-Martin recounted how E. coli bacteria infected her son, Christopher, after she gave him unpasteurized milk, also known as raw milk. “The damage done by this bacteria is incomprehensible,” she said at a Statehouse hearing.

McGonigle-Martin said she had believed natural-food enthusiasts’ claims that raw milk was healthier than unpasteurized milk. But the bacteria caused severe damage to her son’s kidneys and pushed him into heart failure, she said.

The boy, then 7, wound up on dialysis and needed surgeries. The ordeal, which began in 2006, led to more than $550,000 in medical bills.

“It is easy for people to be convinced that knowing your farmer and loving the cow will somehow magically prevent cow feces from getting into the milk,” she said. “We are all suffering from generational amnesia.”

Her son, Chris, is also one of my heroes, and he is very proud of his mom.  See, just a bit of what happened to Chris on the following post:

The Olympian reports, The Laughing Goat of Roy is recalling its Grade A retail raw goat milk because it may be contaminated with Escherichia coli bacteria (E. coli) that can cause serious illness, according to a news release.

The Laughing Goat voluntarily initiated the recall after routine monthly sampling by the Washington State Department of Agriculture discovered contamination. The Laughing Goat dairy has not received any reports of human illnesses associated with the recalled product.

E. coli infections may cause severe diarrhea, stomach cramps and bloody stool. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should contact a health care provider.

The Laughing Goat raw goat milk is sold in pint, quart and half-gallon plastic containers with green caps. Best if used by dates are found on the front label. Refrigerated raw goat milk bearing the best if used by dates of Feb 11 to Feb 19 has been recalled. Recalled milk was sold in western Washington, including Thurston, Pierce, Lewis and King counties.
