With one E. coli outbreak in at least five states and two Salmonella outbreaks in at least six states, it is a good idea for consumers – especially parents – pay attention to the recalls below and about E. coli and about Salmonella.
In conjunction with state health departments, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on March 23 that it had identified 14 cases of E. coli O157:H7 illness among residents Maryland (3 cases), New Jersey (2 cases), North Carolina (1 case), Ohio (2 cases) and Pennsylvania (6 cases). After an epidemiologic investigation, the cause of the 14 confirmed E. coli O157:H7 illnesses was determined to be contaminated Lebanon bologna products sold by Palmyra Bologna Products, Inc. The FSIS and Palmyra Bologna Company, Inc. have recalled approximately 23,000 pounds of potentially contaminated product.

The FDA and Del Monte have recalled nearly 5,000 cases of cantaloupe after 13 cases of Salmonella serotype Panama were reported in the following states: Washington (4 cases), Oregon (5 cases), California (2 cases) Maryland (1 case) and Colorado (1 case).
The Rhode Island Department of Health has reported 25 people who are ill throughout the state, with a common characteristic among many as having consumed zeppoles from DeFusco’s Bakery. 13 of the 25 have tested positive for Salmonella and 10 people have been hospitalized.
