Providence Journal writer W. Zachary Malinowski reported today that Rhode Island “Health officials said Sunday night that all 25 of those who have fallen ill (with salmonella) directly, or indirectly, got their Zeppoles from DeFusco’s Bakery. … Thirteen of the 25 have tested positive for salmonella poisoning, and 10 of them have been hospitalized after they experienced nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.”
Some of the Rhode Island outlets that served DeFusco’s Zeppoles were:
American Bakery Supplies, Roch’s Market, Touch of Class Catering, Meal Works, West Warwick Manor Senior Center, St. John and Paul Church, Sparrow Point Senior Facility, Crescent Park Manor, Colvitto’s Bistro, Sal’s Bakery, Focaccia World, Crugnale Bakeries, Cumberland and Buono’s Bakery.
According to the CDC, for every one person who is a stool-culture confirmed positive victim of salmonella in the United States, there a multiple of 38.5 who are also sick, but remain uncounted. (See, AC Voetsch, “FoodNet estimate of the burden of illness caused by nontyphoidal Salmonella infections in the United States,” Clinical Infectious Diseases 2004; 38 (Suppl 3): S127-34).
Do the math.
