UPDATE:  16 sick in New York.

Yesterday, Wegmans announced that it and its supplier, State Garden, were recalling two types of organic spinach and spring mix due to the risk of E. coli O157:H7.

Oddly, there was no reason (other than the risk of E. coli) given for the recall. Usually, a recall is prompted by a positive product test or illnesses. In the instance of a positive product test, the press release generally says that there are no illnesses reported. Yesterday’s announcement said neither, which leads me to wonder if it were illnesses tied to that product that prompted the recall.

Wegmans has stores in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. It will be interesting to see if any of those departments of health, the CDC or FDA make any announcement today.

Here is the information from Wegmans:

Wegmans Food You Feel Good About Organic Spinach & Spring Mix, 11oz – UPC: 77890-16411 – ONLY product sold between 10/14/12 and 11/1/12.

Wegmans Food You Feel Good About Organic Spinach & Spring Mix, 5oz – UPC: 77890-16437 – ONLY product sold between 10/14/12 and 11/1/12.

Reason for Recall: State Garden is recalling two sizes of this product because they may be contaminated with E. coli O157.

If you still have this product in your refrigerator, please discard it at home.

Stay tuned.
