Hallmark and Westland Meat Packing Company of Chino, California is recalling 143,383,823 pounds of raw and frozen beef products

The problems at Westland and Hallmark began with abusing cattle, moved into a ban of its product from the market, then on to criminal violations.  We now need to get this front and center before a congressional Investigation.

The Largest Recall in United States History occurred Sunday.

Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company of Chino, California establishment is recalling approximately 143,383,823 pounds of raw and frozen beef products that FSIS has determined to be unfit for human food because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection. According to an FSIS press release, through evidence obtained by FSIS, the establishment did not consistently contact the FSIS public health veterinarian in situations in which cattle became non-ambulatory after passing ante-mortem inspection, which is not compliant with FSIS regulations. Such circumstances require that an FSIS public health veterinarian reassess the non-ambulatory cattle which are either condemned and prohibited from the food supply, or tagged as suspect. Suspect cattle receive a more thorough inspection after slaughter than is customary.  Full Release.

In July 2007, FSIS issued a final rule “Prohibition of the Use of Specified Risk Materials for Human Food and Requirements for the Disposition of Non-Ambulatory Disabled Cattle.” This rule requires that a case by case disposition must be made by an FSIS Public Health Veterinarian for every animal that becomes non-ambulatory disabled (“downer”) after passing ante-mortem inspection.

All products subject to recall bear the establishment number “EST. 336” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were produced on various dates from Feb. 1, 2006 to Feb. 2, 2008.  Companies are urged to check their inventories and hold the products until the recalling firm makes arrangements for final disposition of the products.   Full FSIS Website.

  • Lori Borges

SHAME on them and all their workers! How do they sleep at night? Do they, their mothers, wifes and children eat the meat from the animals they abuse?
I think it may be time for them and their workers to find other means of employment, like in the sewer plant, that way the stuff they treat like shit will be just that! I am ashamed to call them a fellow AMERICANS!

I hope the two guys who took such pleasure in torturing animals will be tortured in jail. Now THAT’s a video I would watch!

  • carol

Your organisation should be ashamed of itself.

  • Patricia Meek

I watched film this morning on CNN of the employees using a forklift to “move” these cows to slaughter and was horrified. I understand the meat packing co is obligated to notify FSIS of this and did not. I sincerely hope that this is taken seriously and fines and jail time are handed to appropriately. But of course large corporations are only interested in profits and not being humane. What a sad day it is.

I really don’t know what kind of people would treat animals that way? I would be afraid of what you may be able to do to humans. You must not have any feelings at all, I really feel sorry for people that would be able to do this. I will not buy beef from you, nor will I be eating beef for quite awhile. I will not support any industry that would allow this to go on. When will we wake up to a world that has no feelings. I pray the gov. cracks down on this abuse, somebody please stop these horrible acts. Laura

  • Lorrie Martinez

I hope your company gets closed down forever!!! I hope the morons that tortured those poor animals get tortured themselves. they should be sent to prison and beaten up by fellow prisoners. and the owner of this company should get beaten and tortured too. i ams spreading the word to everyone I know about this company! I hope you all burn in hell forever!!!!!

I saw the horrifying video of the mistreatment of the cattle. I almost vomited. How the hell did you not know this was going on. The people who did this should be put in a cage and tortured. Shame on them and you. Hope this video makes you close your doors for good and that the authority’s put those bastards away for life . Shame on all of you . I truly believe what comes around goes around and you will all get yours when you have to answer to the man up stairs.

Westland Meat Products should be held responsible for any person or animals that becomes sick from their means of producing. Their mistreatment of animals is inexcusable and represents their careless and greedy behavior. The simple statement released by the president of Westland is not sufficient in redeeming their actions. I was shock, disgusted, and deeply sadened at the videos showing the treatment of their animals. As a New Yorker I may not actually encounter their products, however, on my next visit to California, I will adamantly avoid Westland products at all costs.

Very upsetting the way they treat these poor animals. I would like to find an email address to this company. I would like to address my hate to then instead of on these blogs. If anyone can provide one, I will be happy to send this wretched company and the president a very “moving” email.

  • Paul

I have never responded to an article or news event posting before.I was raised on a farm and had to butcher animals but you people at Hallmark DISGUST me.Anything for a dollar eh? The people you endangered for the sake of money is inexcusable.
Those animals should have been put out of there misery a long time ago and cremated.I am actually so outraged I just can’t continue without sinkling to your level.Hope you and your shareholders our proud of what you’ve done. Happy California cows my A$$

  • Craig

I’m glad there are others out there that feel the same way I do about this footage. I’ve searched everywhere for Mendell’s email address so I could tell him personally what a scumbag piece of garbage he is. I hope he experiences a similar fate as these poor animals. You should be ashamed to be a human being Mendell you low life!!

Perhaps if we quit allowing these hispanic ingrates into our country, the integrity and caliber of our workforce would improve and incidences such as this would not be so frequent. I live in S. Florida and can attest to the hispanic population having little to no feeling for an animal of any kind. Wake up America, keep letting these people in and soon you will see this is how the hispanics treat humans as well. It is disgusting, but even more nauseating is the fact they will probably walk away scott free. The US will have their generalized mercy on the poor immigrant. How about we herd all them up in the same fashion and give them the same treatment they gave these animals which in my opinion would be far too good for these ungrateful, system ripping hispanics.

  • slyn

I would love to get a hold of the owner and handler and prod them in the head. WHAT THE HELL kind of business are you running you sick sick individual. Karma will get you and if it does not I’m pretty sure something else will.

  • Pissed

I hope the S.O.B.s involved rot in a jail cell with “Bubba” as a cell mate. This company should be shut down and the owners held accountable. I’ll not eat beef again and hope the beef business goes down the drain.

  • otimio vasquez

This is the most horrific treatment of animals and everybody thats involve in this kind of treatment needs to be charged starting from the top management down to the actual abusers
But unfortunately I believe race will be a big part of the actual people that get charge its alot easier to charge non white people for mistreatment of animals like the black football player vick whereas whites will find ways to avoid beign prosecuted in other words the white racist animal lovers will not put as much energy into makeing sure all the guilty individuals get charged starting from top management

  • sam

Looks like a bunch of mexicans, the company should also be checked for illegals, bet I know what they will find, just another problem we are facing but ol hillary and obama need their votes so a blind eye Will be turned !!!
Think about it people when you go to the polls

  • Roberta

This is one of the cruelest things I have ever witnessed. You people are repulsive…everyone that works for Hallmark Meat Packaging is responsible and I hope this recalls makes you think twice about your actions. You all need to lose your jobs, homes, and financial stability because of your greediness.
How in God’s name you can work for such a cruel and viscious-minded company, we Americans will never know. But one thing I know for sure…we will stop buying beef from killers! Go to hell Hallmark!

  • Kenny

You people are Fu—– pigs. I hope one day all the inhumane bull— that you participated in comes back to haunt you 3 fold!!!! There is no doubt in my mind that you have absolutly no compassion for any of gods creatures! I hope and pray you don’t have pets and if you do………..THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE DOING. And let me guess, I bet most of you go to Church on Sundays. I would stay a little longer after services this Sunday………….you’re going to need all the help you can get. The old saying WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND should be on your minds about now! YOU’RE PATHETIC!!!!

What I saw on the video was awful and shameful. Ive been in the law enforcement field for 40 years. These employees shown in the video should be criminal charged. I can’t see how the supervision can say they did not know what was going on, They only use FORKLIFTS to move the animals. Where they Blind or maybe off that day. The owners of the company should be also charged. I would like to hear their explanation, that they knew nothing…I hope all the large companies who purchase meat products will stop buying meat from this company.

I am in shock! I have never seen anything like it in my life. I know abuse to animal goes unseen everyday. But man did ya’ll blow it. I hope that employee never gets a job in this country again, oh, wait never mind because our tax dollars will be supporting him. The camera is a wonderful thing sometimes, don’t ya agree? Grant you this kind of abuse probably went on everyday at your plant. That is where I blame the owners, you are responsible. What kind of sorry, heartless people do you have working for you anyway. I really don’t know how you can sleep at night. I am saddened, disgusted and would love to get my hands on a cattle prod to some of your low life employees. Hey I agree with some of the other folks who stated that maybe these employees should be checked to see if they are supposed to be in California. I don’t know what else to say except watch out! I’ll bet your gonna loose alot of business and that is they way it should be. Shame on you and your employees. Somebody knew all along this was happening, you just got caught this time!

  • Jane Kay

This wasn’t a one-time event. This was a modus operandi. More individuals than those shown on film knowingly engaged in the activity. Even more than these, the USDA inspectors may have knowingly turned a blind eye. I trust Whole Foods inspectors more than I trust the USDA!

I’m glad to see some of the employees are being charged with animal cruelty. But I won’t be happy until the officers of the company are all charged & jailed, they are after all responsible for the operation, and the ones who should have seen that going on long before the humane society got involved.

  • Barry Kelly

God is watching and He knows your acts of cruelity. Prepare yourselves for the day of reckoning. Perhaps the trident of satan will poke and prode you in your eternal life in hell. There is no redemption for your hideous and offensive acts.
Shame on you, hang your heads and plead for mercy!

Without a doubt…the worst treatment of animals I have ever seen. The owners of the company should receive the same treatment as the cows…yes the workers have been fired…but the guys at the top are just as responsible. Everyone in that yeard knew what was going on….We entrust these fools to take care of our food supply above and beyond what the USDA requires and if the USDA standards are that low we have real problems in this country. Again it all boils down the greed and the bottom line.
Yes the cows are going to die but man have a heart. When I hunt to eat I make a clean kill. It would make me insane if I saw this in person. I would not be responsible for my actions. Criminals…all of them. America all about the dollar. Until we stop praying to the dollar this will go on here and in places like china

  • Steve McMahon

    Two comments:
First, the president of this company didn’t know this went on? C’mon, does he expect anyone to believe that?
Second, the USDA inspectors cleared these old dairy cattle and then they became too sick to stand — how about the one with bad hocks (walking on it’s rear “knees”).
Clearly the meat industry would grind road kill into hamburger if they could — maybe they do.

Close them down – start a class action lawsuit. A terrific example of Republican “Business-Centric Ethics” that foment an utter lack of accountability as we chase the almighty dollar. Why was it that the HUMANE Society had top break this story? This used to be the job of the FDA; but so many jobs lost due to President Bush and his henchmen – does anyone really feel surprise at this story, or is the sheet brutality of the video acting like a cold wake-up slap across our conscience?
Surprising how hard it is to find these guys on the net isn’t it. Their public relations company probably scrubbed all their net connections clean – I’ll bet a week ago they had some nice shiny web site explaining what wonderful citizens their company is – a real “American Success Story”. I’m disgusted!

  • zMary

All of these thugs need to go to jail–just like Michael Vick. From the lowest worker to the highest administrative officer for allowing and permitting this to happen. We animal lovers want our pound of flesh now. (No pun intended).

IT IS ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING WHAT YOU CARNIVORS DO FOR FOOD….I AM, EVERYDAY GLAD THAT I AM A VEGETARIAN. HOW COULD AMERICANS KEEP EATING MEAT KNOWING THAT ANIMALS ARE SO ABUSED AND MISTREATED IN THIS WAY….WAKE UP AMERICA….AND STOP EATING WHAT PEOPLE DO, SO THAT YOU CAN STUFF YOR FACES WITH MEAT….I KNOW THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T HAVE A HEART, BUT TRY AND LOOK AT YOURSELVES IN THE MIRROR AND REMEMBER THAT YOU ATE AND ANIMAL THAT WAS SO ABUSED AND SICK. SO FOR THIS I WISH THAT ALL MEAT EATERS WILL SUFFER A HORRIBLE DEATH FROM EATING MEAT…..HA HA

I couldn’t beleive my eyes when i saw the footage of what you did to those cows! I stood in my kitchen, and cried. How could you!!!! What kind of people are you. I would never buy meat from you, as a matter of FACT i will never eat beef again! How do i explain to my children, what you did… I hope you loose your license to operate business. I will pass this on to everyone i know. one day you’ll have to answer to our creator. what ever will you say?
    DISGUSTING!!!!!!!

  • Suzanne Beck

I want all of you who are sickened by the treatment of the cattle by the Chino Hallmark Plant to know – they may have been selling meat through many other companies than under their own name. Check out http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/product-compint-0000574490-page.html and when you click on ‘meat packing plants’ I think they are all connected, at least that’s what it looks like to me.
ALSO – I don’t remember where I saw the link to the slaughter and horrid treatment of horses as well. It’s horrid enough to sell them for meat after they’ve loyally served as someone’s pet. They are sent to Mexico and Canada and treated as badly as those downed cows. Every day we allow this to continue we are breaking our covenant with God to be caretakers of the animals. I eat meat, but I want and expect the animals to be respected as a feeling creature and to be transported and slaughtered as humanely as possible. Of course there is no way those inspectors were not seeing this – our government won’t help. We must do more to expose the treatment ourselves!
Disgusting behavior and nothing ‘macho’ about it. This can only lead to further degradation of our society and the treatment of not only animals but humans – how far does it go??

I happen to pass by the tv when the undercover tapes were being shown. I was mortified, sickened, heartbroken. What kind of human beings can actually do this to animals. The owner is pulling “I had no idea” crap. Don’t think for one second he didn’t know, this has been going on for years! To make matters worse, they have been showing the tapes so much , that the possibility of young children, or anyone for that matter seeing them will leave them with memories they will never forget! Picket their business, put them out of business and take away any license possibilities they may have for the future!!! SEND THEM TO PRISON!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lauren

AS A HUMAN BEING, HOW DO YOU TREAT HELPLESS, INNOCENT ANIMALS IN THE WAY WHICH YOU DO? THESE POOR THINGS COULDN’T EVEN WALK THEY WERE SO ILL. ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS “KARMA IS A BITCH !”

  • Paula 12 years old

If this is the kind of people we are living with that abuse animals like this meat packing company does then I or any young people want nothing to do with you. To think that our school students may have eaten this tainted meat. Do you care about anything. I can imagine how you treat your wifes and children if you treat poor defenseless animals this way. You will all be punished for this. Mark my words it will come back to you.

  • marion herman

The video I watched was disgusting, and I hope the employees get alot of jail time, and are sent back to their own country, and the company should be shut down,as I’m sure the employees were only doing what they were told to do. I think I’ll start being a vegetarian. Marion

  • aundrea

My daughter is ten years old. Nearly six months ago she made the decision to become a vegetarian as a result of seeing a video on a cable channel depicting the abuse of animals in slaughter houses. My family and I have always been meat eaters. However she chose to do so as a result of the treatment of the animals. She wanted to make a contribution in their honor. I tried to talk her out of it however how could I ever have a word that could be powerful enough to combat the video that we were able to see. Only a minute of footage but probably an ongoing series of abuse and maltreatment on the animals in that meat market. Sure we saw two men involved, but with a company of this magnitude there is many more that are definitely involved. From the president of the company down to the animal caretakers that company needs to be made a symbol of what happens to people who abuse animals. Consumers should never NEVER buy a product from the Hallmark Meat Company division ever again. Look for a new line of work. Maybe you should work with paper products or with animal waste so that you are never allowed the chance to poison and potentially kills children in schools, mothers and fathers, elderly and animals with your vicious attack on the cattle industry for consumption. Sleep well knowing that you luckily got away with people not being poisoned but always know that the Karma you put out on those animals will come back on you ten fold. This is directly towards the president of the company and what you have allowed to happen at your facility.

  • Lisa Long

you should be ashamed for treating animals with such cruelty! I am sad to know that your company does not respect the very life that sustains us. Real farmers hold great respect for their animals. It is obvious that your only concern is the dollar. I will protest against your company until the day your doors are closed for good! Someone needs to face major fines. If this were a dog or any other domestic animal, jail time would be for sure, i only hope that this matter is treated with the same seriousness!

  • Charlotte Bishop

The animal abuse video was absolutely sickening. How dare you? You in the hell do these people think they are? If I could I would suggest they go through the same ordeal they have put those poor abused animals through, as they certainly deserve it. As an employer I would never in a million years hire someone that is so low on the food chain. I hope they go to jail and rot. Thank you for letting me vent. Charlotte Bishop, Oregon

  • V.Marek

Well, I just saw the news tonight in Grand Rapids, Mi. about how westland runs it’s meatpacking facility. Apparently when a cow is so sick it can’t walk in the doors to get slaughtered, westland will just ram them with a hi-lo fork, shock them, stick water down their throats, or I guess whatever the hell it takes to get that poor helpless creature where they want it to go! It was the sickest, saddest, cruelest thing I have seen in a long time. The onlyu thing I can think of to make myself feel better is God is watching them! One day everyone of those scumbacks that abused those animals in the name of profit or any other reason is gonna have to answer for that.I’m praying to God they never sell so much as another meatball for the way they treated those cows. I eat beef, but I that still does not mean they should be tortured and die inhumanely so I can have a burger. It’s so dissgusting I hope they go out of buisiness, because they don’t deserve to get paid to torture animals.I would just die right now if anyone I knew worked for that awful copany!!!

  • Heather

As a human being I am apalled at how Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. conducts itself.
As a corporate animial myself, I can tell you that when egregious behavior like this occurs, it is implicitly condoned by Management.
As a lawyer, I must say that the February 3, 2008 “Statement” authored by Steve Mendell, President of Westland/Hallmark,raises the inference that these inhumane practices were not only pervasive and longstanding, but systematically ignored by Management, the “fulltime” USDA Veterinary Medical Officer and the 4 Inspectors whom he supervised.
Mr. Mendell’s opening sentence purporting to reassure the public that his “company has met the hightest standards of harvesting and procssing meat” is belied by the video tape. Furthermore, I would like to know why the employee who filmed the video was only employed for six weeks from October 3 through November 14, 2007. Perhaps he was fired by Westland/Hallmark because he “blew the whistle” on the inhumane operations. This, of course, would be a violation of both federal and state whistleblower protection legislation. But, what the heck, if you have no respect for animal right why would you have respect for employee rights?
Thank you, whoever you are, for bringing this situation to the public eye.

  • Alexis K.

I am bound and determined to make sure that all know about this complete tragety of the Hallmark Meat Co. I am not going to give up!! This story absolutly breaks my heart. And, to Steve Mendell, your just as bad as the abusers, I read your bullshit plea to your customers. How are you going to flat ass lie when the video tells all??? You’ll get yours eventually. No bad deed goes unpunished!!

  • V.Mare

The president Steve Mendell has said on a website
and I quote they use “the highest standards for harvesting and processing” end quote. If that’s their highest standard I can’t imagine what would be below the standard of what we are seeing on the news. Hey Steve, nobody is buying your bull in meat form, or word form! You must be blind, an idiot and animal torturer or all of thee above, or you think American consumers are! May God show you and your cohorts the same mercy you showed those poor helpless cows!

  • L Faull

These videos are being shown all over the world (I’m in Australia). What an appalling image of American kindness and compassion to injured animals! What an insight into how effecdtive the FDA inspectors are! What an insight into the companies that produce food for consumption, coming so soon after exposes of Kentucky chicken processing plants and the torture of turkeys at a processing plant! What do these say about your society? LOOK at yourselves!!!
I am so glad we here in Australia have decent laws and decent people to enforce them.

  • liz

killers I wish you were in the side of those cow
and see you kill like that sob steven mendell
cruelest thing I wish you if there is a god you suffer in your family that king of tortured some day you will pay for this in your own skin.
    killer killer killer killer sob

  • Jeannine

    Dear Steve Mendell,
In your wealth, in your prosperity, does anything matter to you?
    How about your employees?
Do you not know that what you give you shall receive? It is a law of nature and spirit.
We will watch as you and the others who participate in dispicable lifestyles and practices proceed to reap what you have sown.

  • LeeAnn

Owners, the management, everybody knew and has always known how they have treated these animals. They’re liars if they act surprised just for media’s sake.
But here is the beautiful part…Everybody has to leave this world someday and where do you think these boy’s get the pleasure of going when they leave this world. Not in the dirt my friends. A place of the most un-godly pain one could ever imagine. I am not talking hell either, there is a place much much worse. Trust me, these boys, all of them will get theirs…rest assured. Imagine what they have done to those poor defenseless animals and imagine receiving the same but 100 times over and over and over again. Trust me….They have no idea, but soon enough they will…Rotten scum that they are, will get theirs…I know this for a fact.

I posted a few days ago “Abusing Downer Cows and Feeding Them to Our Kids – It is All About Making a Buck”
    http://www.marlerblog.com/2008/02/articles/case-news/abusing-downer-cows-and-feeding-them-to-our-kids-it-is-all-about-making-a-buck/
The recent YouTube video is certainly shocking, but nothing new – we have simply not been paying attention. Schools are scrambling to pull downer meat off the menu because cows are being abused, and even Agricultural Secretary Ed Schafers issues a statement on downer cow brutality:
“I am deeply concerned about the allegations made regarding inhumane handling of non-ambulatory disabled cattle in a federally inspected slaughter establishment¬Ö. We are confident in our inspection system and the food safety regulations that ensure the safety and wholesomeness of the food supply. Among the federal safeguards in place, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) prohibits non-ambulatory disabled cattle and cattle tissue identified as specified risk materials for use in human food.”
Oh really? But, then no one is talking about the USDA study published in August 2004 that found that downer cows had three times more E. coli O15:H7 than other cows, or the 1985 study linking chloramphenicol-resistant Salmonella newport traced through hamburger to dairy farms. We should worry about abused cows, or dogs and cats being poisoned by the Chinese, but we must worry about feeding cow shit to our kids.
I knew this all sounded a bit too familiar. KIRO TV in Seattle covered this same story in 2002 and 2003 (nasty video’s too) – “Downer Industry Thrives Despite Consumers’ Concerns,” and Elizabeth Weise of USA TODAY broke the same story in 2004 – “Ban on ‘downers’ could change way cattle are raised” – The bottom line is that it is all about money. As Ms. Weise reported:
Chandler Keys of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association says the 150,000 to 200,000 downers a year are a fraction of the 35 million U.S. cattle slaughtered each year¬Ö. An estimated 3% to 4% of beef cattle are downers. But research in Wisconsin and Minnesota in 2003 found 23% of dairy cattle were lame. Dairy cattle are more likely to become downers in part because they live longer¬Ö. Beef cattle are slaughtered in their prime.
Downers banned – do not bet on it. A 2006 audit by the USDA’s inspector general found downer cows were still being processed for food and that USDA’s policy was inconsistent. At two of 12 plants visited from June 2004 to April 2005, downer cattle were slaughtered for food. One facility processed 27 of them, the other slaughtered two.
So, here is the real deal: A downer cow typically brings $250 to $300 at slaughter. Sending the same animal to a rendering plant costs the owner $20 to $50 per carcass. Do the math.

  • klops

W H meat co’s president, Steve Mendell has the arrogance and audacity to publish a statement on Febr 3 08 to say that they have one of the best plants to be seen. Where do you get this from?
Does he live in a dreamworld and not know what his staff is doing to downed cows? What we see on TV and Youtube is just the tip of the iceberg!!!
Mr Mendell should be prosecuted for allowing this and the 2 monsters that were shown on film should have there balls cut off alive and shoved up their rears

  • V.Marek

The president of Hallmark meatpacking says on a webpage dated Feb. 3, that they use “the highest standards for harvesting and processing”. If that is Hallmark’s highest standards, I can’t imagine what on “off” day would be like. Hey Steve, nobody is buying you BULL in meatform or word form! You are either blind, an idiot, and a bald face lier, or all of thee above! Worse you must think american consumers are just as blind and stupid. I assure you we are not.
I personally am never going to forget your company
name, and what I saw you do to those poor helpless cows. I hope God treats you with all the mercy you and your cohorts showed those sick cows!

  • AMERICA

To L. Faull from Australia – the video was secretly captured by the Humane Society because we want to keep an eye on companies that do those type of things. If you read all the comments you would see we DON’T agree with that behavior at all! Because a company does that certainly does not mean all of America is like that. You guys eat Wallabees but we ain’t knocking you, so don’t be so quick to lump us all together mate! It’s bad enough that crap happens ANYWHERE, but I’m not guilty because I live in America.

  • Chuck

Time to stop eating beef – the beef industry is profit oriented at all costs. Buying beef simply encourages the beef industry to continue its torturous practices. At the very least stay away from anything with westland, regal,or Hallmark listed on it.

  • Sydney

What has happened to the human race that I am embarassed to say I belong to. We will do anything for the bottom line, the almighty dollar. That meat packing company should be shut down, but it won’t because it just isn’t that important. But I am proud to say that I am now taking a stand and never eating beef again. One person, one stand.

  • sylvia

i only saw a very small piece of video of the actions those employees did and i have to say that i hope the humane society and governnment authorities prosecute this company to the VERY fullest degree. i hope they shut down. it makes me want to question the stores i shop at to inquire where they purchased their meats. i’m appaulled.
    “man” such an idiot.

  • j ochotorena

    j ochotorena Feb 19,2007 19:32
Unbelievable, You might as well be putting road kill into the slaughter house! How unintelligent can you possibly be? This is murderous of our own people in the US to be eating diseased meat like this. The FDA says its fine? How corrupt is our govt to say germs like this are fine to consume? Is anybody educated? I’m an RN and discouraged with the process of how our food chain is conducted. This meat co. should go bankrupt and others like it too.

  • Cathleen

Where was the USDA inspector at when all this shit was going on? I think his ass should be in the front line with the employees. They should have been arrested not charged with. Isnt that against the law in california? We so then go arrest their asses and let them sit in jail and think about what they are eating in there. Not only is that cruel but it is disgusting. I am not a big meat eater in the first place but to see some shit like this really makes one stop and take a second look about what the hell is really going on in America today. I stand by what I said, arrest their asses all of them

  • john

Now i just finished watching this video and i am in shock! First off how were these employees getting away with this. I thought that they said they had USDA inspectors watching at all times! The two people who were responsible for this horrendous act should be put in jail! Not only that, the USDA employees should be ashamed of themselves and should be punished as well. They are just as guilty as the men who did this in my opinion. I’m a huge fan of beef, after all of this i will still eat meat.

  • Meredith

Do you have a pet? Don’t you know animals feel fear and pain? How can this be happening to these poor cows right here in the US? I had hoped we have a little more compassion for animals destined to die anyway than to torture them first.
Instead of just protection the “downers,” all animals on their way to death row should be treated in a kind and dignified manner.
Furthermore, I think some of the media has focused too much on the fact that school children may have eaten this meat. The problem is cruelty to animals, not who is eating it.

  • mary ann

I believe that this public outcry is mirroring a major shift of opinion. More and more people are realizing how interrelated the meat and dairy industry is. Not just animal cruelty, but also human health, climate change, corporate irresponsibility, labor justice, and more. I plan to never eat beef again!

  • Candy Barnes

This abuse is beyond disturing! What has happened to cause human beings who we would expect to be “civilized” to inflict such intentional harm to these enormous helpless creatures ? The question I raise to society is…. “Why aren’t people who witness any abuse reporting it to an authority to seek help so it will cease?” Although then may not be the party causing the harm, they are just as accountable if NOT MORE! They knowlingly withhold information and this allows the horrifying acts to continue. SHAME to them and the worthless beings doing the harm.

  • name

I had an opportunity to veiw the horrific video concerning the inhumane treatment of the “downer” cows. It made me sick to know that these animals were in so much pain, at being tortured. I feel that the individuals responsible are very sick and should be jailed. They should experience the kind of inhumane treatment that they thrusted upon these poor animals.

  • Jeannie Ramberg

Another reason I gave up meat. We dont need it and its ruining our planet. All the land used to grow grain for beef should be used to produce human food. Meat is filled with antibotics because of the dirty and inhumane conditions they are raised. Growth hormones to make them large..People, wake up and stop putting garbage into your bodies. These companies only care about the big profits. They dont care about the enviroment or peoples health. You think this is an isolated incident. Its not. Factory farms and slaughter houses are not being monotored. There is a shortage of FDA inspectors. The companies require fast paced production line and many workers are unskilled immigrants who do not speak English and fear for losing their job. IF EAT MEAT YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

  • http://www.onegoodgait.com Dawn Hansen

I’m 48yrs and find myself in tears over seeing this video on tv it was horrible to see. how can a person be so removed from humanity to keep shocking a downed animal over and over. Don’t say you now nothing, he learned that from someone in your employment. boy oh boy when reckoning day comes, I along with to rest of us on the foram will no longer purchase your products. Shame…Shame…SHAME..
Your Tools of torture should be taken away from you …….

  • Cindee Dillon

As I watched that video my heart just broke! I find it so unbelievable how cruel people can be. And it is also in every other form of slaughter…poultry, pig, etc. I see you people who hurt innocent animals for what you are, COWARDS! You are the demons of the world. You have all sold your souls to the devil!! You have no backbone or courage to try that on someone who could wipe that smug look off your face, do you! What I wouldn’t give for 5 minutes alone with all of you!!! I say turn all you losers out into the streets and let all of us have a go at ya!!! Oh no, wait, we can’t allow that can we, that would be sooo INHUMANE!!!

  • ann fox

Isn’t 12 years long enough for the insane torture this meat packing plant has placed on helpless cattle. The Humane Society was informed in 1996 about the conditions at this plant and yet California continued to allow it’s operation, and now in 2008 there is a 143 million lb. meat reall coming from this filthy, inhumane slaughter house. Ok, so when does California. put an end to it!! Enough is enough. I hope the consumers fill lawsuits that will once and for all put this place OUT OF BUSINESS!!!

O come on you mean to tell me none of you people eat meat or wear leather. God put animals on this earth for us to use them to farm and as our food supply.. No I dont believe they should be treated inhumanily and Westland was pushing the envelope a bit on the treatment of these animals. They should be held responsible, maybe be fined and strictly monitored, but to recall perfectly safe beef and to take away there livelyhood is what is criminal and inhumane to me. I hope none of you people ever have to face something to where you are judged like you are judging them.

  • Carrie

Steve Mendell is it, who condones the mistreatment of animals? Did someone abuse you as a child that you’d turn into that cruel poor excuse of a man? The film seen here in Florida was appalling to say the least. If I were to be the one to determine your fate, it would be to lock you up and throw away the key after shoving you down a chute with a piece of heavy equipment. You disgust me so hope you get everything that’s coming to you.

  • Tom Crane

Watched the video how could those workers be so cruel and inhumane and be so heartless.Imagine the pain and needless suffering the poor animals felt as the workers tortured them with their killing prods hoses and fork trucks. No living animal shall be subject to such cruel and abusive treatment.I am so appalled at this video that its time to stop eating beef!!!!

  • kim

I was so horrified I have not had red meat since the first airing. Also the treatment of chickens at the tyson plant. I have not had chicken since it aired going on 3 months now.
I don’t think I can go full vegan. Anyone know of a site or company that takes the best care of their animals?

  • jazz

I was heartbroken at the abuse these cattle suffered. So thankless are the laborers that eat the meat the cattle provide. A Montana girl myself, where dealing with cattle can be frustrating,I would never dream of doing the things that were done. We need stiffer penalties for people that are so cruel.I can’t express enough the emotions this stirred in me.I only wish it were your plant my husband was inspecting, you would of been caught a lot sooner!

  • Charlene

It truly saddens me to see those pictures but I have seen worse. I do not eat meat or dairy and truly do not understand how anyone can look at an animals face and then go to the grocery store. Look into the face of your dog and know that in the Phillipines they kill and eat dogs on a regular basis. If that does not break your heart than obviously the vidoes on TV will not stop you either. I heard that you can judge a people by the way they treat their animals………
