The President signs the “FDA Food Safety Modernization Act.”

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release January 4, 2011

On Tuesday, January 04, 2011, the President signed into law:

H.R. 2751, the “FDA Food Safety Modernization Act,” which modernizes the food safety system to better prevent food-borne illness and better respond to outbreaks.

I must admit, given that 48,000,000 of us get a foodborne illness yearly, signing this bill without much fan-fair was a bit odd.

I don’t get it. With bi-partisan support, why did the White House not make this bill an example of bi-partisanship with big fanfare? Doesn’t make sense. But was there a rush to get it signed before tomorrow’s new Congress begins? Very dissappointing, but at least we have a Bill. I’m going to look into where we are at with Senator Leahy’s Food Safety Enforcement Act. There should be no monetary issues associated with that Bill so the new Congress shouldn’t have issues in that realm. Perhaps there could be some fanfare if that Bill makes it to the President!
