Monroe Iowa Teen, Kayla Boner, Dies From E. coli

KCCI reported late yesterday that the Jasper County Health Department said Friday that a 14-year-old Iowa girl died after testing positive for E. coli. A spokesperson for Blank Children’s Hospital said Kayla Boner died Friday morning. She was admitted to the hospital Tuesday morning. Hospital officials said they’ve treated three patients with E. coli in the last two weeks. Polk County Health officials said they know of at least six E. coli cases in the county. Jasper County Health Department officials said they don’t believe Boner’s case is linked to any of the other cases.  That previous story – Three Children Test Positive For E coli

And, I get to watch my 15 year old girl play soccer today.

I’m sure you are aware of an ecoli vaccine that has been created in Canada by a company called Bioniche Life Sciences. The vaccine has received a “restrictive” approval in Canada. Recently the USDA announced they wanted more information from the company and thus have put any approval on hold.
To read a story like this, knowing there is a vaccine available for ecoli is frankly disgusting. The USDA should be ashamed and there needs to be political pressure put on them to expedite the review of this vaccine.
It is expected that full approval for the vaccine will occur in Canada. Recently, a high end beef producer in Canada has started to use the vaccine in their business. Thus showing a great deal of confidence in the vaccine. The company was also granted several million dollars to help in the marketing the vaccine, another positive indicator that approval is coming.
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family. I hope someone will help them beat down the door of the USDA for some answers on their continued ignorance of a solution to a devastating problem.
    Thank you.
