These items were shipped to farmer’s markets, retail locations, and restaurants in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and eastern New York. The products may have been shipped to neighboring states in the immediate area.
FSIS was notified of an investigation of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses on September 16, 2016. Working in conjunction with the Connecticut Department of Public Health, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, FSIS determined that there is a link between beef from Adams Farm Slaughterhouse and this illness cluster. Based on the epidemiological investigation, 7 case-patients have been identified in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia with illness onset dates ranging from June 27, 2016 to September 4, 2016. Traceback information was available for 5 case-patients and indicated that all 5 case-patients consumed beef products supplied by Adams Farms Slaughterhouse. FSIS continues to work with public health partners on this investigation and will provide updated information as it becomes available.
E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps 2–8 days (3–4 days, on average) after exposure the organism. While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This condition can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5-years old and older adults. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output. Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.
FSIS and the company are concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers.
Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them.
The Salmonella illnesses emerged after a fundraiser for the Lascassas Fire Department fish fry on September 10th in Rutherford county.
More than 400 people attended the event at the station on Lascassas Pike.
The Pueblo City-County Health Department, El Paso County Public Health and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment are jointly investigating an ongoing outbreak of Campylobacter infections linked to raw milk from Larga Vista Ranch in Pueblo County. The agencies are warning consumers that drinking unpasteurized milk can pose severe health risks and there is no method to assure the safety of raw milk.
Health officials have identified 12 confirmed and eight probable human cases of campylobacter since Aug. 1. The most recent onset of illness was September 16. All the individuals who were sickened reported drinking raw milk from Larga Vista Ranch. All 20 confirmed and probable campylobacter cases live in Pueblo and El Paso counties.
Campylobacter is a bacteria that is destroyed only by pasteurization. Symptoms of campylobacter infection include fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting. People experiencing these symptoms should consult with their health care provider.
The state health department notified approximately 175 people who are participants in the Larga Vista cow share operation on Sept. 8 and will do so again today. Cow-share operations allow individuals to buy a share of a cow and in return receive raw, unpasteurized milk.
People are advised not to consume raw milk and raw milk products from Larga Vista and to discard any such products in their homes. The risk of getting sick from drinking raw milk is greater for infants and young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Some of those sickened in this outbreak were not shareholders, but obtained raw milk from others who were. Shareholders are not permitted to redistribute the raw milk they receive.
The sale of raw milk for human consumption is illegal in Colorado. However, people may legally obtain raw milk by joining a herdshare (ownership of a cow, goat, or herd) program. Shareholders cannot distribute raw milk further.
Kellogg announced on its website that no other Eggo products are impacted by the recall, which is being done voluntarily.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
No one has fallen sick yet due to the potentially-tainted waffles, Kellogg says, and added that they are taking the action as part of a “commitment to the health and safety of the people who eat (Kellogg) foods.”
The Eggo Waffles being recalled were distributed to customers and retailers in 25 states (CO, CT, DE, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, VA, VT, WI, WY).

Several states, CDC, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are continuing to investigate a multistate outbreak of foodborne hepatitis A. Information available at this time does not indicate an ongoing risk of acquiring hepatitis A virus infection at Tropical Smoothie Café’s, as the contaminated food product has been removed as of August 8. Symptoms of hepatitis A virus infection can take up to 50 days to appear. As a result, CDC continues to identify cases of hepatitis A related to the initial contaminated product.
109 people with hepatitis A have been reported from seven states: Maryland (10), New York (1), North Carolina (1), Oregon (1), Virginia (90), West Virginia (5), and Wisconsin (1). 39 ill people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
Epidemiologic and traceback evidence indicate frozen strawberries imported from Egypt are the likely source of this outbreak.
In interviews, nearly all ill people interviewed reported drinking smoothies containing strawberries at Tropical Smoothie Café locations prior to August 8 in a limited geographical area, including Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.
On August 8, 2016, Tropical Smoothie Café reported that they removed the Egyptian frozen strawberries from their restaurants in Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia and switched to another supplier.
As reported by Eater, according to the CDC, the strain has caused illnesses in Colorado, Idaho, and New York; it is not yet known whether all of the cases stem from the same source.
In Seattle, the majority of the cases have been linked to Matador Restaurant, where the first five people infected dined in August. Three of those five were hospitalized, and one, a 16-year-old girl, developed a kidney disease known as hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be fatal.
All five people have since recovered, but new cases have cropped up in the weeks since. Two of those were also found in Washington, and the other three were out of state. At least one of those out-of-state cases also dined at Matador during the exposure period. Links to the restaurant have not been identified among the two out-of-state cases.
All together, ten people have now been affected by the outbreak. Seattle health department officials say the E. coli strains in all cases share a similar genetic fingerprint.
The Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources 7 (BFAR 7) has suspended the operations of a Cebu-based seafood exporter after scallops were linked to a hepatitis outbreak in Hawaii. BFAR 7 initiated an investigation on the operations of the company, which includes a thorough “contract tracing” of their products. The company, which is based in Lapu-Lapu City, exported frozen raw scallops that as of September 7, has infected 252 people.
According to BFAR 7:
In view of these emerging threats to seafood safety which pose serious risks to human health, BFAR as the food safety regulatory agency of fish and fishery products vested with authority by the Food Safety Act of 2013, is now implementing emergency measures, re-assessing, re-evaluating, and conducting traceability audit of De Oro Resources, Inc., the reported Philippine exporter of frozen raw scallops based in Lapu-Lapu City. Pending the on-going traceability audit, BFAR is temporarily suspending the accreditation of De Oro Resources, Inc. to export fishery products. BFAR has likewise directed the De Oro Resources, Inc. to suspend the distribution of its existing inventory of fishery products and to recall all previously distributed products belonging to the same batch or of the same distribution period.
The BFAR 7 investigation will include inspecting the company’s scallop farm in Masbate and collecting samples there to determine if the products were already tainted with hepatitis A before these were shipped to their suppliers. BFAR 7 will also inspect the company’s operations, including subjecting their personnel to a health test.
